Inadequate Road Closure Signs
Reported in the Damaged / Missing / Facing Wrong Way category anonymously at 19:59, Sat 20 April 2019
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways 1 minute later. ref: 1608504.
Cranford Road, Barton Seagrave will be closed for through traffic until 20th. August 2019. The Road Closure signage in Cranford is woefully inadequate and misleading. I live on Cranford Road, Barton Seagrave and all day long vehicles are driving along from Cranford and having to turn around at our location after misunderstanding the road closure/diversion signs in Cranford. The Diversion Sign (Large Arrow) in Cranford High Street points towards Cranford Road as if directing Traffic in that direction. Also when approaching High Street, Cranford from Grafton Road there is a sign saying Road Closed and again with an arrow pointing towards Cranford Road. Confusing for Motorists. When entering Cranford Road from the High Street/Grafton Road junction surely a visible structure across half of the carriageway would be appropriate to provide a visible indication that the road ahead is closed, leaving no doubt in their minds. What they do get is a view along Cranford Road and as far as the eye can see the road appears open to traffic. Clearly the current signage requires urgent review as demonstrated by the number of motorists who misunderstand it. This is leading to major frustration by those who are making this avoidable journey as many turn around and drive at high speed back towards Cranford. I also briefly looked at the signage where Cranford Road meets Barton Road where the road signs are equally poor.

The signing of the closures will be in accordance with industry standards, in addition, unnecessary blocking of the highway, that is required for access, would not be possible. We shall request that the developer responsible for the works inspect and review the layout for compliance and also see that there is no confusion resulting from the signing.

I was a Police Traffic Officer for many years and from my extensive experience can tell you that the signage is misleading. We are having very long articulated HGV's coming down here and having to reverse onto peoples driveways to turn around. It does not affect the developer so I am sure he will say that the signs are ok.

Someone (presumably the developer) has updated the signage but has not altered the misleading sign in Cranford High Street which has a straight ahead arrow pointing along Cranford Road showing that as the diversion route. That leads you straight to the road closure! Just a couple of yards into Cranford Road (West) of the Grafton Road junction you need a Road Closure Sign so it shows motorists which road is closed. With the Diversion pointing along Cranford Road motorists are assuming that Grafton Road is closed so they are driving straight towards the road closure in Cranford Road. It could not be easier to rectify.
