Traffic light too short

Reported in the Request Timing Review category anonymously at 07:34, Monday 17 June 2019

Sent to Northamptonshire County Council 1 minute later. ref: 1663090.

The pedestrian traffic light is only 5 seconds long which is not enough time for many to cross safely, particularly the elderly and the very young or those with limited mobility. It’s barely enough time for an able person to cross. This is creating a dangerous situation whereby people are either crossing illegally or are not finished crossing by the time cars are able to go. As this is a busy intersection, it needs to be made longer for the high number of pedestrians who use it.

  • The green man signal is an invitation to start crossing. Following the green man is a ‘safety intergreen’ period where both pedestrians and vehicles receive a red signal; this is extended by overhead on-crossing detectors whilst pedestrians are still on the crossing. This means that even if you step onto the crossing at the very last moment of the green man you can complete the crossing safely before traffic receives its green.

  • Whilst approaching the traffic lights at Eskdaill And Victoria streets I was in the right hand lane to turn right into Eskdaill and when the lights turned green I was waiting for a gap to turn when imagine my horror when the lights went back to red WITHOUT the right turn green filter coming on and I was stuck in the middle of the road . What is happening, this is horrendous and I have now noticed it’s a regular occurrence . Surely there is something badly amiss here ?

  • This filter is still not working. At peak times only two cars can turn right on each cycle causing horrendous queues and motorists using the Regent Street rat run.
