Ambiguous speed limits

Reported in the Damaged / Missing / Facing Wrong Way category anonymously at 20:37, Thu 8 August 2019

Sent to Northamptonshire County Council 4 minutes later. ref: 1725405.

Could you look into the confusing speed limits around the new roundabout please.

The day after the camera van left after spending a week enforcing the temporary 30mph limit and with no change in circumstances the speed limit heading towards the new roundabout from the M1 jnc 16 has increased from 30mph to 70mph (as there is a central reservation and the last sign encountered is now the national speed limit).

The national limit continues past a number of covered 40mph signs until temporary 40mph signs half way through Upper Heyford.

Meanwhile when you approach the roundabout on the new bypass temporary 30mph signs are present.

So on the roundabout the limit is both 30mph and 70mph.

Really poor temporary signage is a recurring problem in this area. There seems to be very little care and common sense.

Poor signage causes confusion, frustration and ultimately accidents.

Thanks very much.

  • Heading toward the new roundabout from Flore there is a temporary 30mph speed limit part way through Upper Heyford, then there is a single 40mph limit sign on the left which is obscured by a temporary roundabout sign. So now we have a 30mph, 40mph and 70mph limit on the roundabout.

  • The speed camera van was present again today but no one has any idea what the speed limit is. Were the cameras set to trigger at 30mph, 40mph or 70mph ?

A 30mph / 70mph speed differential between vehicles is very dangerous.

  • The cynic in me says this is revenue generation by Northamptonshire Police. The speed limit in the area of the A45 from the M1 J16 should be 40mph as per TTRO(18/19) 1612 issued by NCC which should be signed correctly as per the Road Traffic Act. However as the previous post states it is impossible to know what the correct speed is due to the various different signage. I note that after the safer road team of Northants Police were told about the lack of correct signage (on Friday 9/8) some temporary 30 signs appeared just off J16 of the M1 presumably put there by NCC highways. Pity you cant get that right because of your TTRO. Another aspect of the speed is when you leave the services there are no speed signs on the exit. Also whilst looking at the speed signage could you also look at what roads are subject to the clearway regulations as the signage for this is totally wrong. One final point is are any speeding tickets that may be issued by Northants Police enforceable due to the fact that the signs are all in correct and they do not conform with the relevant TTRO. I am waiting for it to land on my doormat so that I can see what the magistrates say about this total mess when I show them the extensive dash cam footage I have of the area. NCC it is not difficult to sort out so please give it a bit of priority or at least tell the police to stop using a camera van there until you do sort it out.

  • The temporary 30mph signs just off M1 jnc 16 have re-appeared overnight (along with the camera van) but there is still a 40mph sign approaching the roundabout from Upper Heyford. This is unacceptable.

  • Provided response to customer advising this section of carriageway being reviewed as part of a road safety audit process and remedial works shall be carried out in due course. Concerning the speed limit enquiry I would recommend the customer contacts the safer roads team at Northants police to discuss the mobile speed camera and their enforcement activity programme.
