Re-painted turn off stop box too narrow

Reported in the Road Markings - Worn/Faded category anonymously at 03:09, Sat 17 August 2019

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways 1 minute later. ref: 1734977.

After the re surfacing and new road markings on the A508 between Old Stratford and Roade. The central right turn lane for Yardley road (approaching from old stratford, heading for Cosgrove) has had the lines placed too close together, meaning vehicles waiting to turn right could be sitting across lanes, that could lead to a possibly fatal accident.

  • New road layout at Hanslope turn is a fatal accident waiting to happen. The waiting lane turning right into Cosgrove/Hanslope has been remarked up narrower than before and now has a head on lane for cars waiting to turn the opposite direction. This confusion will cause a head on collision. Whilst waiting in the middle of the road passing vehicles , especially articulated lorries, are literally within 4-6 inches of the standing cars waiting to turn off the A508! This turning requires urgent bollards like the Cosgrove turn / speed restrictions/ cameras or even better a roundabout. Please fix before an innocent person is killed

  • Just had a very, very near miss with a lorry oncoming. It was NEVER like this before you resurfaced it. I would say that the safety zone for right turning traffic has been reduced by at least 10% and now there is no room for error on ANYONE's part. I had to stop and compose myself after completing the right turn into Yardley Road off A508, as I would class it as a near death experience and with my two children in the car! Please install safety bollards to protect this right turn lane or paint it bigger. Your contractors clearly have no idea how big a car is, and I know that contractors for the new builds in Hanslope use that junction too (as well as tractors this time of year). IT'S AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN AND I DON'T WANT IT TO BE ME.

  • Following the recent resurfacing of this junction the new markings have been made narrower for vehicles wishing to turn right.

When sitting in this junction you are highly exposed and with the speed of traffic it is only a matter of time before a fatal head on collision happens.

Previously bollards and a wider central bay were in place now, I am staring at HGVs coming towards me at full speed, almost needing to close my eyes and hope for the best.

  • Navigated this turn recently and it is Wayne too narrow both sides of the car comfortably on the cats eyes. Urgently needs a bolster installing and widening, a Transit that was turning right blocked the lane it was in from going any further so not ideal in its current state. Needs to be fixed before an accident, considering this was raised a month ago this needs looking at ASAP.

  • Thank you for your enquiry. A road marking survey was undertaken prior to the surfacing work. Following your enquiry we have reviewed the survey and the road markings at the turn lane on the road and they have gone back in as previous.

  • Thank you for your response, can you confirm that the markings have been repainted so they appear as before?

You mentioned they match the pre work survey but how they are currently painted is much narrower compared to their original placement, I would question the survey carried out as a regular user and along side the other comments against this report.

My wheels on both side of my car (not even thinking about a lorry!) shouldn’t be on both lines putting others and myself in danger, I would insist this is relooked into as a priority as under duty of care to the road users.

  • Sorry but I think that you need to look at this again. The lines are definitely narrower and the junction is a death trap. There needs to be bollards in the road like the Cosgrove turning at the very least. Many years ago Milton Keynes Council agreed to pay half towards making this junction safer but Northampton Council never took up this opportunity please can you explain why?

  • Was this ever reviewed and changed to ensure the lines were back as prior to the roadworks. I actively avoid using this junction as it is unsafe.

  • It was not changed back to as it was before the re-surfacing , apparently someone with a wonky tape measure checked and its ok and we are all wrong🤣
