Dangerous horses on public rights of way
Reported in the Obstruction (Not Vegetation) category anonymously at 13:02, Mon 2 September 2019
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways 4 minutes later. ref: 1752838.
Yesterday, I was walking my dog back into Desborough along footpath UH27; when we crossed the river onto footpath UC12, a brown horse ran right up to us, I let it smell my hand and then stroked its nose. It then went over to the dog, which was on a lead busy smelling the grass, and it got increasingly agitated. I pulled the dog close to me, but the horse was jumping about and started kicking out with its back legs. I was concerned it was going to kick my dog in the head, so we retreated to the bridge, with the horse following closely behind. We then found ourselves trying to find an alternative route back into Desborough. We walked along the wrong side of the river back to the Rothwell Road, which was a complete pain. We then got onto footpath UC1, where we encountered some more horses. There was a man and his son standing on a raised area staring at a white horse, which I thought strange, so when we got near we gave the white horse a wide berth. This horse then ran up to us, I again tried to be friendly with it as I had with the other horse and we walked by, it was right behind us when I felt its teeth on my arm, I pulled it away quickly and told it not to bite. We continued on our way when the man and boy both shouted to us to look out. The horse galloped up to the back of us and started jumping about. As we were the right side of it we kept walking, and eventually it gave up and we left it behind. These horses should not be on public rights of way, they are dangerous.

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you, we have had no further reported incidents and believe that maybe the problem horse has been removed, unfortunately some horses do not like dogs at all and always take caution around them.
