Short crossing time
Reported in the Request Timing Review category anonymously at 12:29, Mon 20 January 2020
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways 2 minutes later. ref: 1949903.
The pedestrian crossing between Wycliffe road and Lutterworth road opposite the Aryan cafe, has a very short crossing time which is difficult for those with mobility issues. i have residents at my care home who struggle to get across before the traffic lights go green the crossing time is approximately 5 seconds and there is no flashing man. also there is no audio indication either which is difficult for those with a brain injury. is there any way the crossing time can be extended and a flashing man introduced this would also support the elderly who take time to cross and mothers with small children.

ank you for contacting Northamptonshire Highways. As per our telephone conversation an engineer will review the current crossing times to confirm that they are suitable for the crossing width and location. As the crossings are located and operate a part of the main junction it is not possible to have a flashing green man and in its place we have a blackout period that appears between the green man extinguishing and red man illuminating. The familiar pelican crossing with the flashing amber and green man is no longer allowed to be installed and as sites reach the end of their life are being replaced with Puffin crossings. With regards to providing audible beepers to the crossings. This would not be possible due to there being several crossings at the location that change at different times. As alternative each of the pushbutton boxes on the right hand side have a device called a Tactile cone fitted to the bottom of the unit. This rotates slowly when the crossing is on green and is there to assist users that have sensory impairment to have an alternative notification of it being safe to cross in addition to the green man.
