Barriers needed, risk
Reported in the Obstruction (Not Vegetation) category anonymously at 16:30, Fri 24 January 2020
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways 7 minutes later. ref: 1958825.
I wish to ask for an investigation into the Marefair Road, Northampton. NN1 1SR I own a Private day care setting for children from 3mths to 3yrs, called Footsteps Daycare. We have been established for a number of years and made various safety measures to the building and our surrounding land. However, I have been monitoring the activity on the Marefair Road due to a high number of concerns from our parents. Could someone get in touch with me regarding the road running along our setting, the concerns have been raised from our parents regarding the buses traveling extremely fast and of course close to the pavement. I have attached some photos of the concern, the children leave our building and take the pathway to the main pavement, but at this point there is little or no view of what is rushing down the road towards St James. I feel that having some barriers place just at the bottom would stop any potential risk.

Thank you for your enquiry, the installation of any kind of bollard or railings at this location would not be the right solution. To protect a property from a fast moving vehicle, especially lorries and other goods vehicles, would require something more substantial such as a significant motorway safety barrier. This would be an expensive solution and something we would try and avoid in urban areas. Given the current budget limitations on the local highway authority, and the need to focus on areas that have a proven record of serious injuries and fatalities, a safety crash barrier at this location is unlikely to be affordable, even if it were the solution to a recognised problem. We shall of course continue to monitor the movement of traffic through this busy area of Northampton town centre.
