  • I was travelling at 18mph towards the A5 when I crossed a road gritter travelling toward Northampton. This was in the village of Roade. The speed limit in the camera controlled zone is 30 mph. The grit was being dispensed onto oncoming vehicles hence why I slowed down to 18 mph. The grit hit the front of the vehicle and the bonnet. On arriving at home I inspected the car and noticed stone chip damage to the bonnet and the right front of the vehicle. My complaint centres on the fact that I believe on this particular gritter the grit is being dispensed too high hence the stone chip damage. In early December 2019, on the same stretch of road, my vehicle sustained damage including a dent to the bonnet and multiple stone chips to the front of the car when I crossed an oncoming gritter. This time the speed was 50 mph. In my 14 years of driving in the UK it is the first time I have had such damage to my vehicle from a gritter on two occasions. As this is the second time in as many months, this is why I have raised the complaint so the gritter or the materials used can be inspected. My concern is dispensing grit on opposite direction traffic has the potential to startle a driver and cause an accident. In additional if the grit is being dispensed too high, it has the potential of hurting pedestrians in residential areas or passing cyclists.
