Thank you for your query to Northamptonshire County Councils Street Doctor service with regard to the condition of the verges in Archer Avenue, Braunston It is not actually an offence to park on a verge unless it causes an obstruction or contravenes any parking restrictions (i.e. yellow lines). The current highway law relating to parking on verges is complex and does not give local authorities much leverage to tackle these particular issues and this is a perennial problem throughout many areas of the county with many households owning multiple vehicles. This is especially an issue during the winter months when the verges do not have an opportunity to dry out. In the past we have attempted to discourage verge parking by the introduction of “Do not park on the verge signs” however these are purely advisory and have no legal significance. It was found that these signs proved generally ineffective in areas where it was local residents parking as they were only generally ignored by locals and no action could be taken against them. They are now only generally considered for use in the vicinity of school where there is good justification on safety grounds and where it is visitors to the area rather than the residents themselves parking on the verge. If damage to verges becomes a safety issue then this will be picked up on our routine inspections of the area and will then be attended too as necessary with either stone of topsoil. I’m sorry that I cannot provide a more positive response but hope that this explains the situation.
