Drivers jumping the lights of queueing across adjoining lanes when the lights change
Reported in the Request Timing Review category anonymously at 12:19, Thu 21 May 2020
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 2123861.
I regularly observe drivers jumping the lights at this short stretch of road and it is amazing that there are not more accidents as a result. In addition at this particular junction cars will enter the areas where the carriageways join and block the lane making it impossible for other vehicles to move forward when their lights change. The solution is not to change the light changing sequence. Marked areas across the crossroads outside the cock hotel, at the marked location and where the welford road and Harborough roads merge which vehicles should not enter unless the lane is empty could help resolve part of this problem, plus cameras at each of the main junctions will dissuade the majority of drivers from jumping the lights (not the pedestrian crossings)

Thank you for your enquiry. Often in our haste to get into work or heading home we disregard courtesy and respect for other drivers, especially during ‘rush hour’. Unlike specific road traffic enforcement laws that are monitored by cctv in cities such as central London, the painting of a yellow box would unlikely to have any affect and may even have the tendency to cause further delays by not maximising use of what is very scarce and essential carriageway space. In addition to this, if we were granted permission by the Chief Constable to paint a yellow box at this junction, a precedent would be set and we would then find it difficult to refuse further applications from other similar busy junctions and roundabouts in Northampton and across our county. At a time of budget pressures on the County Council the maintenance costs involved would have to be considered, as well as it being resource limiting and expensive to administer. If drivers are ignoring road traffic signs and traffic lights then this would be an enforcement matter for Northamptonshire Police Safer Communities Team. They can be contacted by calling the non-emergency number 101 or by following the link on the Northamptonshire Police website. The Police may be able to establish mobile speed cameras/monitor driver behaviour in this area and identify the drivers breaking road traffic law by the registration number of the vehicle(s).
