Verges being damaged again
Reported via Android in the Verges - Damaged by Vehicles category anonymously at 08:33, Sun 12 July 2020
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 2196213.
The verges as you come into valley road were repaired by the council due to severe damage by vehicles . The vehicles are parking on the repairs again causing further damage . A longer term solution needs to be looked at such as creating parking spaces on this side of the road the same as the opposite side .

Thank you for your enquiry regarding a suggestion to put a hard surface on the grass verges for resident’s parking. Following technical advice based on the County Council’s network management policy, we would not consider placing any form of surface hardening i.e. course gravel, loose chippings, paving, concrete or tarmac, onto grass areas next to the highway. Highlighted by adverse weather conditions, careful consideration must be made into the effect of rainwater drainage. Roadside verges soak away water from the highway and by putting tarmac or any hard surface on a grass verge, will increase the possibility of rainwater flooding across roads and footways or into business properties. It also becomes expensive to install and maintain a hard surface, as footways that run adjacent to grass verges generally also have to be built up to stop flooding from happening and instead allow the rainwater to be diverted into a drain gully. We also do appreciate that there are areas where parking is at a premium and people endeavour to maximise the available on-street and off-road parking spaces. Unfortunately, the County Council no longer considers installing ‘No Parking’ type signs or such measures at wooden posts, bollards or barriers to prevent parking on verges to be a priority. Nevertheless, some verges may look aesthetically messy and unsightly, especially after wet or inclement weather. Therefore if there is significantly damage to a roadside grass verge, this can be reported on the Northamptonshire County Council’s online ‘Street Doctor’ system Street Doctor for consideration under our annual maintenance programme for re-seeding (or re-turf if particularly muddy/roiled) and within the constraints of the Northamptonshire Highways financial budget.
