Bridge over Willowbrook on Bridge St. Apethorpe in need of repair
Reported in the Potholes / Highway Condition category by Jo Williams at 12:31, Wed 5 August 2020
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 2231752.
The bridge (grade II) is in need of repair. Large sections of the stonework on both sides have no mortar between the stonework. The bridge is currently vulnerable as large agricultural vehicles are passing over it and a minor collision could cause the wall to collapse. I have tried to report this problem by telephone but it is not an emergency and therefore does not meet your criteria. Hence reported as a road problem.

Thank you for contacting Northamptonshire Highways. We inspected the bridge today, and it has not deteriorated since our last inspection. The last scheduled inspection noted that there are areas of weathered masonry, pointing loss and scrape marks to the parapet caused by vehicles using the bridge. Masonry parapets are not designed to contain modern vehicles, especially agricultural vehicles that are getting both longer and wider, and with the structure being Grade 2 listed, we cannot alter the existing parapets. We will continue to monitor the condition of the parapets during our scheduled 2 yearly inspections, and add the bridge to our forward programme for repointing and repair works when budgets allow.
