Faded Road Marking and Lack of Signage
Reported in the Road Markings - Worn/Faded category by Nadine Clark at 08:38, Thu 6 August 2020
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 2232788.
The Nobottle Road has become a race track for vehicles and there is insufficient road signage to warn drivers of the road ahead. There is a concealed entrance coming out of Nobottle at the top of Nobottle Grange Farmhouse and with the increase in traffic on the Nobottle Road and the increase in traffic, both vehicular and horse related, coming in and out of the entrance at Nobottle Grange Farmhouse, it is getting extremely dangerous and is an accident waiting to happen. The slow sign on the road outside the Farmhouse is faded, and is barely visible now. Drivers need more signs around these bends to get them to slow down, as there are a lot of vulnerable road users using this stretch of road now and the drivers are putting them at high risk.

Thank you for your query to Northamptonshire County Council’s Street Doctor Service with regards to you concerns about safety on the Nobottle Road, Great Brington. The Nobottle Road is typical of the vast majority of rural network around the county and the UK in general. These roads tend to bend and undulate; vary in width; present the occasional farm, minor junction, property or dwelling frontage and generally allow motorists to make safe progress within the national speed limit of 60mph. Highway Engineers have recently carried out improvements to the warning signs on the Nobottle Road in the vicinity of the turns into Little Brington where there had been a record of injury accidents. The possible introduction of a reduced speed limit was considered at the time however it was concluded that there would be no realistic prospect of compliance of a lower limit Given the open, rural nature of this arterial route, we know from experience that the placement of a pair of speed limit terminal signs with a lower restriction at any point along this section will have little effect on the prevailing speeds. In other words, given the road characteristics and surrounding environment, a careful and competent motorist would not fully appreciate why a lower limit is in force and there would be widespread non-compliance. In addition, a lower limit in such an open environment may mislead motorists engaged in turning movements at the minor junctions into assuming that traffic approaching on the main carriageway will be travelling at a slower speed than is actually the case, thus increasing the likelihood of vehicle conflict. With regard to the section by Nobottle Grange Farm the injury accident records for the section, over the last five years has been checked, and no injury accidents have been reported by the Police in this time. This site would therefore not currently warrant the introduction of any other measures compared to many other roads in the county with much higher levels of recorded accidents. This accident record of this section, along with all the roads throughout the county, will continue to be monitored by our Road Safety team. Any sections where clusters of accidents are occurring will be investigated further and, if appropriate, further measures will then be considered.. Unfortunately every section of road network represents a risk to one type of road user or another and it is impossible to totally eliminate those risks. It is likely that the majority of motorists travelling on this road are law abiding and compliant. Regrettably there will always be a small minority of thoughtless motorists who disregard limits and do not drive in accordance with the conditions of the road or environment. We will however ask our maintenance team to refurbish the faded “SLOW” markings on the approach to the farm access.
