Speeding problem on St Peter's Avenue nn16 0ha
Reported in the Potholes / Highway Condition category anonymously at 18:00, Tue 11 August 2020
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 2240759.
Speeding problem on St Peter's Avenue sadly getting worse. Can we encourage safe cycling by reducing the speed limit to 20 from 30 and introduce speed bumps for those who like to speed 50mph anyway? We are desperate for traffic calming measures here, as cars and motorbikes are speeding all the time.

We will review the speed limit and request for associated calming measures. This will entail the gathering of speed data, collision statistics, liaison with police colleagues and site visits.

We have now had an opportunity to obtain some speed data in St Peters Ave, analyse any collision data and liaise with our police colleagues for their view. The 85th Percentile speed for traffic travelling north was recorded at 28mph and south, 25mph. The 85th percentile is the speed at which, or below 85% of all traffic is travelling. Around 3,000 vehicles were captured in the data collection process and there is no significant collision history recorded by the Police. The speed limit request to reduce the current 30mph restriction to 20mph was considered by the Speed Limit Panel which includes a police representative. He has delegated authority from the Chief Constable in speed limit deliberations. The Panel therefore provides a consensus decision and response to requests for speed limit changes. The Panel determined that there is no compelling evidence to support a reduction in speed. We know that the evidence supporting 20 mph signed only schemes is inconclusive in terms of the benefits delivered particularly in relation to the primary objectives of reduced speeds and casualties. Simply reducing the default speed limit to 20mph will merely produce an illusion of change and provide no tangible benefits for the local community. In taking a pragmatic view we therefore remain cautious in terms of implementing 20mph speed restrictions. There would therefore be no support far this particular measure in St Peters Avenue particularly as recorded speeds are comfortably below the current posted speed limit of 30mph.
