Road surface damaged
Reported in the Potholes / Highway Condition category anonymously at 08:54, Thu 20 August 2020
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 2254532.
Since the new cycle lane bollards have been installed there is no longer enough room for cyclists to avoid the uneven road surface/pot holes/ drain covers. The new white lines would have been sufficient to indicate the cycle lane and would give cyclists a chance to move out around any hazards if necessary. They now don't have this option . I really think this needs looking at again !

The works to install wands along St Mary’s Road were funded through Tranche 1 of the Emergency Active Travel Fund which was announced by Government in May 2020. Northamptonshire County Council was allocated £351,000 to support walking and cycling, including for the introduction of temporary and experimental measures to reallocate road space away from motor vehicles such as through the introduction of light segregation for cycle routes, which is seen as providing a more comfortable experience for cyclists. St Mary’s Road was the first location where we have experimentally implemented light segregation through the use of wands. As this was a temporary measure introduced in the aftermath of the COVID-19 lockdown, no consultation was undertaken, although if the intention was to make the scheme permanent then consultation would be undertaken as part of the application for a permanent traffic order. This road was selected because it was wider that many other roads in the area. Implementing these experimental measures enables us to see how well such segregation operates where there are existing cycle lanes, before considering more permanent/harder segregation elsewhere. The intention is the scheme will be monitored regularly to understand whether for those choosing to cycle using the lane has improved in the presence of the wands and whether the installation causes problems for other road users. Your feedback is therefore very valuable. With regard to the issues with potholes and other surface hazards, it is understood that some resurfacing work has been undertaken since the wands have been installed. If there are any specific road surface hazards that remain, please continue to report these to Street Doctor to ensure they can be investigated and any required action taken.
