Dangerous footpath, after rain - Northampton Rd, at bench at top of Hayway.
Reported via desktop in the Obstruction (Not Vegetation) category anonymously at 11:59, Wed 21 October 2020
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 2350918.
After rain, when walking along Northampton Road towards Rushden Lakes the section of path near the bench at the top of the Hayway junction becomes extremely slippery with mud and rain. You cannot walk around it as the verge is on a slope and this itself becomes slippery with the mud. There is no footpath on the other side of the road to use.

Further to my complaint in October, I notice that there has been no progress. I took the attached photos yesterday. To walk the path you now have to get behind the bench and hold onto it in order you don’t slip over or try and get up the sloping grass verge and walk in the road. I watched whilst others did the same - it is what we all have to do. Someone is either going to break a bone slipping over or be hit by a car. This is one of the main routes to Rushden Lakes and is the only path available to use. It is absolutely unacceptable to be expected to walk along a path that is constantly in this state.

This is a very busy walkway now Rushden Lakes is open. When the walkway is like this it makes it untenable for anybody who doesn't have a car, anybody older with mobility problems or disabled, with wheelchair etc. The whole route down is in fact not practical for purpose. No walkway on opposite side of road and very narrow, muddy, slippery, footpath only. Too busy road to step off into it, & a steep mucky bank to get up, if you can, to even step into the road. In these covid times it makes a mockery of social distancing.

I have walked along the path today. Water immediately in front of bench and surrounded by deep mud - even behind the bench. The path is not safe to walk on and I try to avoid as much as possible but it is the only direct route to Rushden Lakes. I walked on the road on the way back and clung on to a lamp post to get back down to the path again - this is not acceptable. The mud flows down the bank on to the path between number 73 Northampton Road and the Hayway junction.

Three times since the 10th December NCC have posted " under further investigation ". Has anyone looked at it yet ? I have now seen people walking on the road to avoid the path and slope, both being in such a bad condition. This is putting lives at risk. I can remember complaining about this path at least four years ago and still nothing happens.

6th February 2021, Still bad this footpath. I walk to Lidl from Higham for shopping.I cannot easily pass this point with my shopping trolley. I could take the car , but I like to walk and be 'green'.
