Roadside drain blocked and overflowing.

Reported via mobile in the Blocked/Damaged category anonymously at 13:40, Wednesday 20 January 2021

Sent to Northamptonshire County Council less than a minute later. ref: 2490712.

If any of the drains in this village are blocked it puts too much pressure on the rest. We have already experienced serious flooding further along Main Street this winter.

  • Thank you for your enquiry regarding the drainage in Cottingham. The gullies in the area are on an annual cyclical programme of works and were visited in July last year. To read more about gullies please click here https://www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/ councilservices/ northamptonshire-highways/ roads-and-streets/ Pages/ highway-drainage.aspx The response that highways give to flooding is based on risk and our priority is to protect life and wellbeing and to manage property and environmental damage. It should be noted that a gully with silt in is ok. They are designed that way and as long as the outlet is clear the water will drain away, it will just take time. They are not blocked but the amount of rain that fell in January, in a short space of time, meant some gullies could not cope. This means that even recently cleared gullies can, and will be, overwhelmed by the volume of water they have to deal with, and it will take time for water to drain.
