50-75% Blocked Ditch On Butcher's Lane

Reported via desktop in the Blocked/Damaged category anonymously at 22:23, Tuesday 9 February 2021

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 2536925.

There is a ditch that runs down along Butcher's Lane from the footpath at the top of the hill opposite the play area all the way down to the cross roads with School Lane & Church Street.

As can be seen from the photos the ditch is partially blocked (I would say between 50 - 75%) with fallen tree branches, leaves, silt/mud deposit build up and general debris. This is causing an obstruction to the water flow and impeding water from flowing freely into the pipe under the driveways at the bottom of the hill and on into the drainage system.

When there is heavy rainfall or snow thaw, the ditch becomes full and cannot cope and as such it causes and overflow out on to the road, You can see the route the water has carved into the verge when doing this.

This ditch has been partially blocked and getting progressively more so for well over a year, also as I live in Radbourne House I can attest to the fact that a fault with the power supply in the ground beneath the verge by the ditch / pipe that caused us and Stonecroft a power outage last year for over 12 hours was primarily caused by severe water damage which Western Power attributed to the blocked ditch system.

This is a relatively low cost and easy maintenance job for a digger to come and clear, dredge and deepen the ditch and a team to rod the pipe under the driveways and fit a new grate.

Also the verge has become significantly damaged by the water flow when the ditch has overflowed and due to the ground being heavily saturated as a result. This requires an application of top soil and grass seed to allow the verge to regrow.
