Reported via desktop in the Potholes / Highway Condition category anonymously at 11:28, Monday 15 March 2021

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 2609358.

It's the junction coming out of Rockingham Road shops on to Woodlands Avenue the amount of cars that pull out with out stopping is dangerous. I don't know how many times I have had to perform an emergency stop. This road should be made one way, They come in from Woodlands Avenue but have to go out at the end of the shops near the roundabout

  • Thank you for your enquiry. Whilst your suggestion on creating a one-way traffic system would indeed remove the conflict of opposing traffic, the down side to this is that road planning evidence suggests vehicle speeds will increase. While congestion is not always ideal it does create an artificial yet effective traffic calming measure, which keeps the speeds in a residential area are relatively low. Furthermore highway schemes of this nature would require careful consideration and a Traffic Regulation Order which would need publication, consultation and be subject to objection by any person, group or business, along with the approval of the emergency services. It is highly likely that a dedicated one-way street would create increases in traffic and possible 'rat-runs' on adjacent roads, in whichever direction the new road system ran. Changes in direction would also unquestionably increase traffic on neighbouring roads in having to take the re-routed traffic, which may then require additional road work (signage, road markings etc.). All signage associated with the one-way system would have to include advanced warning, right and/or left turn prohibitions, one-way/no entry and repeater signs; all of which require illumination and increases the costs considerably. We do appreciate your concerns on traffic congestion and associated road safety, and on finding ways to alleviate traffic problems in this busy area of North Northamptonshire. However given the scale of the works required and the associated costs, we have no plans for the introduction of a one-way system at the present time.
