Vegetation encroaching over the footpath
Reported via desktop in the Restricted Visibility / Overgrown / Overhanging category anonymously at 21:16, Tue 13 April 2021
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 2669458.
The footpath on Corby road leaving Cottingham toward Corby has been narrowed to a dangerous point due to mud off the high verge and nettles / rambles . This is a narrow road and having to walk close to the edge of the road puts pedestrians at risk of being hit by van/lorry and bus wing mirrors when vehicles try to pass each other on the road . Also there is not enough room for people walking in opposite directions to pass safely with one person having to walk into the road to pass . As my wife and I experienced when we walked up town with our 1 year old grandson in a pushchair . We had to take the pushchair into the road due to another couple walking down to the village las had a small child in a pram . Either way the potential for an accident is very real .

This path is now very narrow due to the overgrown hedge and brambles (some reaching the kerb). I have today spoken to Rockingham Castle’s Agent (King West in Market Harborough) and they have advised me that their contractor will be instructed to clear as a matter of urgency.

Rockingham Estates Contractor attended the site last week and with a tractor hedge cutter had now cut back the hedge and offending brambles. Unfortunately the weeds and sundry vegetation from the base of the hedge remain and this is covering the tarmac public footway. This now needs to be cleared back by NNC Highways as a matter of urgency to maintain the maximum width of this busy footway and to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

Our team have undertaken a further inspection of this site and can confirm that works to clear back the remaining vegetation that currently reduces the width of the footway will be undertaken during the autumn season.

The removal of the remaining vegetation to the base of the hedge, as you promised, during the ‘autumn season’ has not taken place. The footway is still very narrow in many places and poses a hazard to pedestrians. Would you please carry out this work asap.

This has still not been attended to and this busy path continues to be extremely narrow in places forcing pedestrians to walk close to the kerb running the risk of being hit by the wing mirrors of passing vehicles. This was promised to be attended to at the end of last Autumn’s growing season!

I noticed yesterday afternoon that the clearing of the vegetation from the footway has still not taken place. With the recent heavy rainfall coupled with water flowing from Rockingham Estates land this has caused a serious blockage to drainage gullies causing a collapse to the tarmacadam surfacing around one gulley (separately reported). Consequently a warning bollard has been placed there by a Parish Councillor. This is now a serious hazard to vehicles and cyclists on a very narrow highway. Failure to timely resolve one issue, despite being reported numerous times, has now caused another problem.
