Unsafe crossing point
Reported via desktop in the Obstruction (Not Vegetation) category anonymously at 11:41, Thursday 22 April 2021
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 2685407.
A crossing is in place with central reservation but is unsuitable due to the narrowness of the road and type of vehicles traversing the road.
Beyond the crossing is a warehouse / distribution centre for Whistl and there are frequent daily heavy vehicle movements to/from the site. If lorries pass whilst pedestrians are on the central reservation, there is insufficient distance between the vehicle and the pedestrian on the reservation and the pedestrians are at risk of being hit by the passing lorry.
I believe for the safety of the pedestrians the reservation needs removing and replacing with a Zebra crossing, without central reservation, to ensure pedestrians can cross safely in one single crossing rather than 2 stages.
I would also suggest that a better crossing point would be further along Shipton Way adjacent to Prestige's pedestrian gate (Easting 493691 , Northing 267100). The road straightens here so there is better visibility, plus it is narrow so less distance to traverse. There is a large volume of footfall to/fro the premises but the pedestrians from Prestige and Whistl do not use the current reservation crossing, instead choosing to cross further down where the road is straighter, narrower and visibility is better to allow safer crossing.

This continues to be a significant problem with pedestrians crossing the road at multiple narrower point, despite busy traffic, in order to avoid the dangerous crossing point.
Additionally there has been an increase in HGV's due to Whistl extending into the Belkin Building.
HGV's using this section of the road pass too close to the reservation for it to be safely used as a crossing point, particularly when travelling down Shipton Way towards the Belkin Building due to the S shape of the bend which pushes the HGV towards the reservation and away from the footpath kerb.
A crossing facility that requires traffic to stop both ways, without a central reservation (as there is insufficient space) is the only safe option.
Action needs to be taken please before a pedestrian is injured using the reservation or trying to cross the road elsewhere.
This link will take you to CCTV footage (speeded up) taken at approx 4.30pm last week - a typical example of pedestrian movement at start/end or working day.
