Damage to the highway/pothole at edge of private drive.

Reported via desktop in the Potholes / Highway Condition category anonymously at 16:33, Friday 7 May 2021

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 2712399.

Ref 2688955 recently reported same problem and classed as 'no action'. I recently damaged the wall of a tyre beyond repair. Entering or leaving my drive involves the front offside tyre cutting across this defect. There is the damaged sunken highway/pothole edge and a second ledge formed by the inset stones. Because the highway is narrow all traffic takes the line through this defect making it progressively worse. You cannot help but notice driving across this defect. This may not fit your size of defect/type of road criteria. However I will remind you that this has now been reported twice. My tyres cost approximately £250 each to replace.

  • Thank you for your enquiry and for bringing this matter to our attention. We understand that you have concerns about the condition of Welsh Road; specifically, you feel there is a pothole increasing in size and that it has caused damaged to tyres on your vehicle. We appreciate your comments and have carried out a further assessment of the issue and are pleased to confirm that the carriageway defects that meet the specifications for remedial work you have indicated in this location, have a repair scheduled to resolve them. This should hopefully be completed within six months’ time. Please be assured that you will receive an update once repairs are concluded.

  • I understand that this work will be carried out in due course. However, the heavy rain of May has only made the defect worse. I am unable to avoid driving across this pothole due to its position, I am usually at an angle to it because I am either turning in or out of my drive. I can feel the tyre slipping across the defect which can only be harming the tyre wall. I have already lost 1 tyre with a tear on the inner wall. Although I cannot say for certain that this pothole resulted in the tyre damage, it seems likely. Please sanction this work ASAP before you get the added cost of replacing damaged tyres.

  • Following the dry spell, I removed the dirt from the defect which was previously mud. The defect in fact goes through the carriageway into dirt. I measured the depth. I can tell you that it is 10cm at the deepest part to the height of the kerb stones ( I don't know their proper name.) I have backfilled the defect with dirt in a hope that this may lessen the drop for my vehicle. I am certain that you are sick to death of hearing about this defect. I intend to keep contacting you until it is repaired.
