Disable access regularly getting blocked.

Reported via desktop in the Road Markings - Worn/Faded category anonymously at 15:25, Monday 24 May 2021

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 2746178.

The disable access to madams gardens is at the top of madams hill. this access is regularly being blocked by people parking at the bottom of the hill but also cars pulled up to the top. could a double yellow line be added to the entrance way to make people aware not to park here as it is stopping wheelchairs being able to get through and in the event of an emergency then an ambulance wouldn't be able to get a patient through.

  • Thank you for your query to Highways regarding difficulties for disabled residents accessing Madams Hill Rothwell. An Officer has visited the site and although the double yellow lines could be introduced across the disabled access this would be a very lengthy process. As we receive hundreds of requests each year for new / revised parking restrictions the most efficient and practical way of assessing these is to collate them into an annual review of parking restrictions. The legal costs are same for one change or dozens of changes, so there is logic in completing one amendment order each year for the district. The downside of this is the length of time it takes from submitting a request to completing a review. The review process is generally undertaken in the late summer with the legal process occurring over the autumn and the actual lines being introduced in the following spring. In instances like this an alternative solution is the installation of a white “Access” line across the disabled entrance would however be much simpler, and quicker to implement. Although this marking has no legal significance it has proved helpful in discouraging inconsiderate parking in most instances. We will arrange for this to be implemented next time our road marking contractor is in the area. If this is not effective we can review at a later date and then reconsider the introduction of yellow lines.
