Blocked Road Gullies

Reported via desktop in the Blocked/Damaged category anonymously at 13:47, Wednesday 26 May 2021

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 2750673.

Many of the road gullies along the stretch of Corby Road from the junction to the 30 mph sign approaching Cottingham are badly blocked and need a through clean out. A couple are fully blocked with mud to the underside of the grating. Water flows out from the fields during heavy rainfall such as recently experienced this month from the Rockingham Castle estate and the gullies are unable to deal with the excess water. This causes flooding which is a hazard on the road near the junction with Millfield Avenue. I notice that this problem has been reported a few months ago on a number of occasions but no rectification appears to have taken place.

This work still has not taken place despite your assurance that instructions (on two occasions) have given to the relevant department to carry out the cleaning. Besides the three gullies shown in the attached photos there are a further two gullies which are fully blocked. All the other gullies in this stretch of road should, in my opinion, be inspected as there is every chance water is not draining away satisfactorily. The new North Northants Council appear not be performing in the rectification of this problem and I would ask you to deal with it as a matter of urgency.

  • Every time this is updated you mention raising a further works order. Meanwhile the gullies remain blocked as shown in the recent photographs. With the seasonal and heavy thunderstorms it is certain that excess rainwater will continue to flow down the hill into Cottingham causing a hazards to all road users and pedestrians.

You requested photos showing a worsening situation. I think these two photos show just how serious a problem this is and which has been the case for many months.

  • This is really poor. The problem was caused by Gigaclear’s subcontractor when laying the new fibre cable on the verge on the left hand side of the road entering the village a few years ago. It has been compounded by heavy vehicles and buses going close to the verge due to the narrow highway and a lack of concrete kerb and loosening soil which then blocks the gullies. Gullies should be cleaned on a regular basis by the Highways department.
