Safety bollard missing at the bottom of Chapel Lane and causing a health and safety hazard

Reported via desktop in the Safety Bollard - Damaged/Missing category anonymously at 15:21, Friday 1 October 2021

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 3036361.

The black iron bollard (which was removable and stood next to a fixed bollard) has been missing for over 2 years. It is required to restrict vehicular access to the pedestrianised residential lane - located at the bottom of Chapel Lane and adjacent to Queen Street, between the Chapel building and Askew's hair salon. The exposed raised ironworks and the hole for the missing bollard constitute a health and safety hazard, which we currently warn pedestrians about by using a road traffic cone. There is restricted street lighting in Chapel Lane (due to a street light still not working which was reported 2 years ago) and it's becoming more dangerours due to the darker nights/mornings. The bollard needs to be replaced urgently and the area made safe again. Thank you.

  • This complaint was dated 1st October 2021 y another home owner tag myself, it’s been missing for TWO years! It is removable but without it there there is a big hole people trip over or into as there is no light in that area! We all pay out council tax and it needs replacing urgently not with some useless cone that is moved. It is your responsibility to make it safe - we are alerting you to this. Why you feel it’s ok to say no action required is beyond me! I was told when I moved her May 2020 people had complained to the council and still nothing has been done. It needs replacing with the correct Ballard. Why have a section on complaints stating ‘missing dangerous bollard’ if you won’t actually do anything about the missing dangerous bollard.

  • Northamptonshire Highways is liaising with the Parish Council with regard to replacing the lockable bollard and they are assisting by ascertaining who will need to hold the relent sets of keys. We would not want to install a bollard without it being secured as it would probably just go missing again and we would not want to lock it in place without ensuring those who need access have the relevant key.
