A tree covered in ivy next to number 7

Reported via desktop in the Restricted Visibility category anonymously at 21:35, Wednesday 20 October 2021

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 3073784.

There is a large tree that overhangs the road, my property and the property next door. This tree today dropped a branch that bounced off the top of my car. As the tree has a large amount of ivy all around the trunk and a fair amount of the branches, I feel this is a danger to myself and other people walking on the pavement. There are always branches that have fallen from the tree, most of which are small but today I recovered a branch the size of my arm which as you can image if it hit someone, would have probably lead to a hospital visit. This was reported on the 6th October 2021 to customer services.

  • Thank you for your enquiry and for bringing this matter to our attention. We can confirm that site has been visited and the investigation now complete. Whilst the verge is part of our highway network, the area where the tree is located is not on/part of the public highway and are the responsibility of the adjacent landowner and is outside Northamptonshire Highways’ control and we therefore have no jurisdiction on the area. The responsibility would fall to the private landowner. Apologies that we are unable to assist further. However, in the meantime, we can advise that; should a tree encroach over into a property boundary, a resident can cut a tree back to their property line as per common law. More information can be found here: trees.
