Bridleway too narrow due to cultivation

Reported via desktop in the Passage-Obstructed/Overgrown category anonymously at 14:33, Monday 25 October 2021

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 3083494.

The bridleway has been made too narrow to be safe to use by equestrians due to cultivation. The section left which is very close to the hedgerow has lots of rabbit holes which is very dangerous for horses. This same issue was reported to the council last year. It is such a shame as bridleways are vital to equestrians to help us spend less time on fast, busy roads. But they are being made impassable by land owners, unfortunately horses cannot walk in ploughed ground as the risk of injury to their limbs is great.

  • Thank you for your enquiry. This location was inspected on 26/10/21. A letter has been sent to the relevant landowner confirming that this headland bridleway has been encroached by cultivation and the minimum width which must be available for users is 3 metres. Whilst the current surface is usable, the landowner has been notified not to carry out any further disturbance to the surface of this route which will allow natural vegetation to regenerate. Northamptonshire Highways will continue to monitor this route.
