Dangerous Traffic Calming Islands

Reported via desktop in the Potholes / Highway Condition category anonymously at 13:46, Wed 24 November 2021

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 3141505.

A new traffic calming measure has been installed along this stretch of road but is dangerous as the two halves are two close together. This causes the signage in place to obscure the view of vehicles coming the other way and it is not possible to safely assess if a vehicle is coming the other way and if so, how close it is.

It is particularly problematic at night - last night driving home I stopped at the traffic calming measure (priority to the other side) as there was a vehicle (size undetectable) coming the other way, but I could not tell how far away. It turned our to be a car and a lorry - one of which was not visible.

After they had passed through I waited a moment to make sure it was clear and as I could see nothing and no lights were visible I then proceeded. Half way through I almost collided with a cyclist who was not at all visible when I set off - their single light (no high vis or reflective wear) was total obscured by the signage and they only became visible just after I had passed around the first set of bollards at which point without obstructing signage they appears in my headlights.

The two sections of the traffic calming need to be further apart to enable vehicles to safely pass through without risk of serious accident.

  • The remaining signage is still somewhat imparing visibility due to the closeness of the two sections (too close in my opinion) and the double set of signage.

Could a single set be placed centrally to allow better visibility of traffic coming the opposite way - rather of a double set with one on the kerb edge?

Or alternatively could the two sections of the traffic calming measure be set further apart.

  • Thank you for your enquiry. Traffic Management cones have been removed from site so the visibility has improved and the builds outs were constructed as per the highway specification so are not too close together if driving at the appropriate speed limit.
