Significant flooding again on highway caused by blocked drain

Reported via desktop in the Blocked/Damaged category by Adam Wood at 11:00, Monday 3 January 2022

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 3211781.

This drain blocks very regularly due probably to tree root damage from a nearby large willow. I have been reporting it regularly for about 3 years now. The problem needs to be resolved rather than just the drain being emptied. The more it floods the more the verge erodes causing further flooding: an endless and costly cycle. I have reported this by phone today as it is classified as an emergency but I could only leave a message

  • Still a filthy muddy flood from this blocked drain. Very unfair that this problem which has been recurring year after year for ages. Cameras used several years ago concluded that the pipe was broken by the roots from the willow tree which is alongside. Still nothing has been done and goodness knows how much constant wasted visits have cost!!!. Please can we have a permanent repair.

  • Still no action in resolving this growing problem. This was first reported by me in January 2018 (others probably long before then). Since then it has grown from being a minor issue to a much more significant one. The bank has been eroded by about 1m exposing debris which then further worsens the situation. The drain is clearly damaged since emptying it simply does work - the flooding is back within an hour or so because of the build-up of water in surrounding areas. This is completely unacceptable and reflects very badly on WNC's reputation. Unless this is resolved fully and promptly then I will be left with no alternative but to raise it as a formal complaint with WNC and, after that, with the Local Government Ombudsman.

  • Thank you for your further comments. Unfortunately, we have had some issues with procuring the CCTV; however, this has now been resolved and our Drainage team will be attending next week. Our Community Steward will also be attending to make sure everything goes smoothly and we will be carrying out a CCTV survey to pinpoint if there is a broken pipe causing this issue. We would like to thank you for your continued patience and understanding and we will update you as soon as we can.

  • Sunday 27th February I cycled this road today. On the A5 side of the flooded corner the road was covered in black ice. I was going very slowly because of the corner and the flood, but could not see the black ice, of course - and fell off when my front wheel simply went from under me. It was a near miss in terms of injury - I got away with bruises and ripped trousers (thick winter!). I will of course avoid this road on any other frosty morning - but do please get this fixed or put up slippery road warnings before the next frost, and 🤞🏼 that no-one slips and is injured before you do so. The road was slippery for 100 meters, I had to walk on the verge, remounted only when safe.
