Junction Kettering Road/Derby Road is dangerous to cross

Is it possible for this junction to be narrowed so that it is less dangerous to cross as a pedestrian? Or, at the least, could a zebra crossing be put on the road so it makes clear the right of way for pedestrians?

  • Thank you for your enquiry. Whilst our network improvement funding is mainly targeted at schemes which help improve facilities for walking or cycling, reduce congestion or which bring about an improvement to the highway network, unfortunately at this present time, as with the majority of local highway authorities nationally, Northamptonshire Highways finances are currently fragile and we have to prioritise our limited maintenance funding with available resources. Consequently your suggestion to narrow the junction of Derby Road with the A5123 or provide a pedestrian crossing at this location, is unlikely to be considered under our current criteria. Whilst we accept that every section of road network represents a risk to one type of road user or another, it is sadly impossible to totally eliminate those risks, particularly when occasionally there are a minority of motorists who wilfully choose or inadvertently ignore the rules of the road and may cause concern with pedestrians wishing to cross at this junction. However, if your local Councillors are supportive and able to work with the police and local highway authority towards both local consensus and offer the appropriate funding, we would then be in a better position to work together towards these local aims where they conform to national guidance and current policy. Your request for changes to this particular junction could then be put into the funding bids for future financial years.
