Bridleway wilfully blocked

Reported via desktop in the Passage-Obstructed/Overgrown category anonymously at 19:31, Friday 11 February 2022

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 3306149.

Bridleway has been wilfully blocked by someone who has divided the field into paddocks and provides no access between them. Someone spoken to on site attempt to deter riders/cyclists by warning them of horses who may kick.

The footpath is also similarly blocked.

Present for at least a year.

  • Thank you for your enquiry, concerning access issues in this area. Unfortunately the Rights of Way at this location are recorded as legal anomalies. Public Bridleway SH30 and Public Footpath SH29 are not joined by a legal highway and there is currently no legal access for members of the public between the two routes. A legal order is required to resolve this problem. Whilst it may take some time before this issue is resolved, we can assure you that Northamptonshire Highways are aware of your concerns and are working to resolve the issues on the Rights of Way in this area.

  • Thank you for the reply. Happily, Definitive Map Modification Order 746, dated July 2005, orders that the A508 to SH29 be added as a bridleway. This connects with SH30 and provides a continuous bridleway from the A508 through to SH30 and southeast along the canal to the Navigation, Cosgrove.

However, I was flagging a slightly different matter; footpath SH31, running south-west from the canal to the A508, and bridleway SH30 from the canal bridge to Old Wharf Farm, are both blocked.

Grateful if you could pursue 746 with the Ordnance Survey and consider the SH30/31 blockages please.

    Thank you.

  • Thank you for your update. Public Footpath SH31 has recently been legally diverted around the horse paddocks. This route may not yet be shown on Ordnance Survey Maps but it is signed on site and new kissing gates have been installed. If possible please ring 01604 883400 and request to speak to the Area 3 Rights of Way Officer to discuss your concerns further.

  • This is still an issue, there are NO signs on the site as claimed, NO diversion and a single kissing gate that leads nowhere. This requires further investigation as both the bridalway and public footpath have been willfully blocked. There are also several misleading signs at the entrance to the farm incorrectly stating there is no public access or right of way. Someone needs to actually go and take a look at this rather than trusting the landowners claims.

  • Thank you for your enquiry. Unfortunately Public Bridleway SH30 is recorded as a legal anomaly as a cul-de-sac dead end route. A legal order may be required to resolve the many issues currently found on this particular path. We can assure you that Northamptonshire Highways are aware of this problem and it is correctly recorded to be looked at in the future.
