Illegal parking on grass verge - significant damage to grass
Reported via desktop in the Verges - Damaged by Vehicles category by Mairi Chapman at 17:54, Sun 15 May 2022
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 3527066.
There have been regular signtings of vehicles parking on this grassy area in front of the bridlepath walkway entrance, and also the farms gate. This is often restricting access for the farmer and causing a nuisance to pedestrians also. This is a busy A road and the roundabout is unkept making it very dangerous for roundabout road users to see cars that are coming off of the grass verge after parking. There is now significant damage tothe grass verge on highways owned land. A visual deterrent needs to be put up or people caught and on the spot finned. More and more people are using this as a parking area for walking or walking their dogs. The Parish Council are fully aware of the damage and are looking for support from Highways to seek a resolution/solution to the problem.

Thank you for your enquiry. Unfortunately, Northamptonshire Highways no longer consider installing ‘No Parking’ type signs or such measures as wooden posts, bollards or barriers to prevent parking on grass verges to be a priority. Public consultation is required for imposing any enforceable new parking restrictions and would therefore need agreement with all the locally-elected West Northamptonshire Councillors for this area, to support this kind of action being taken. Please be aware that due to the costs to the highways authority involved in progressing such orders, the Council only carries out reviews on an annual basis. Further information and the online application can be found via the following link: https://www.westnorthants.gov.uk/ parking-roads-and-transport/ request-new-parking-restrictions. Waiting restrictions indicated by yellow lines apply to the public road, pavements and verges. Therefore, it would still be against the law to park on the verge if double yellow lines were in place around it. Additionally, the Parish Council may wish to consider installing a sign on the gate stating ‘no parking / keep clear for access’ which can be fixed to the gate or fencing as required.
