Fire hydrant is obstructed by concrete/bollards

Reported via desktop in the Loose / Raised/Sunken category anonymously at 15:04, Tuesday 17 May 2022

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 3532106.

Please take urgent action to remove concrete/broken bollards from over top of fire hydrant at the pinpoint on map Paterson road. It is a high fire risk area with recycling center. Please see following email trail We have visited the site today to access to the hydrant itself ,which is in the grass verge. The access to the hydrant was blocked by concrete boulders caused by lorries entering the Recycling Centre destroying the concrete verge and wooden posts. Due to lack of access, the hydrant is currently inoperable.

The Fire Service will undertake minor repairs to hydrants but for larger or major repairs, we commission the local water company for the area which is Anglian Water in this case. Anglian Water will undertake repairs to Hydrant chambers and frames but will not undertake repairs to surrounding area such as the concrete verge and posts (which should be maintained by the local Highways Department). This is because they do not want to become struck into a cycle of repairing the highway within the warranty period under the New roads and Streets Works Act. The area in disrepair is the verge rather than the hydrant itself and Highways Department needs to attend to the issue. We do not have authorisation to undertake Highways work.

There is at least one premises within Paterson Road that is deemed to be high fire risk so some measure to prevent the area around the hydrant becoming damaged needs to be undertaken.

We are willing to meet on site to discuss the issue with the Highways Department if required.
