Manhole covers pop off every time it rains heavily
Reported via desktop in the Blocked Ditch Causing Flooding category anonymously at 11:37, Thu 22 September 2022
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 3841073.
The 2 Manhole covers outside 9A September House come off completely when it rains heavily, this is because the water is not draining through and overflowing. our door is 4-5 meters from the manhole so you can imagine the amount of water that gets backed up onto our drive. When there is rain, its like a river flowing through the road with all the water coming up from the drain. i called to report this before but the advisor did not explain the issue correctly and this was closed down stating there was no problem but this is ongoing and has not been resolved.

To whom it may concern,
My name is Creon Gee,
I am emailing you with regards to an ongoing problem we are having regarding two drains (1 storm and 1 foul) that are situated on our driveway. After submitting several flood reports to both the council and Anglian Water to no avail, I was told to report the issue to you.
The 2 manhole covers to the drains are situated on our driveway approximately 4-5 metres from our front door. These drains run through our property and are the main drains for several other streets.
Every time there is heavy rain or a sudden flash downpour both drains backup and overflow and the manhole covers come clear off. This results in a tremendous amount of water pouring out of them which consequently comes flooding towards our home entering under the door and also down the side of our home flooding our back garden. This amount of flooding results in us having to be out there in the downpours trying our best to stop water breaching our home.
This has happened many times in the past year alone and has started to wash away the hill next to our home, which as you can appreciate is a worry. Not only is it affecting our home it is taking a toll on us mentally. We are constantly on edge when it rains or is forecast to rain as we don’t know if we will be flooded again.
What we ideally need is the manhole covers on our driveway to be covered over to help stop the flooding from happening. There are more manhole covers situated at the end of our driveway on the road about 10 metres away from the ones on our driveway so it is possible to still carry out inspections if needed. With winter approaching and all the rain and storms likely to head our way this problem needs resolving sooner rather than later. We would greatly appreciate help on this matter and if someone could come and visit or speak with us to discuss the matter more in depth. Please find attached photos showing the extent of the last 2 recent downpours.

However, the location of this cover is not on the adopted highway. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the adjoining private landowner to maintain and is outside West Northamptonshire Highways’ control. Apologies that we are unable to assist further.
