"Unsuitable for HGVs” sign missing

Reported via desktop in the Damaged / Missing / Facing Wrong Way category anonymously at 13:01, Monday 8 May 2023

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 4528081.

The “Unsuitable for HGVs” temporary sign put up is missing. This is the 2nd time this sign was damaged or missing. Photos attached. HGV’s using West side of the Bidwell Lane from B645 is not a temporary issue. Since January 2022 a plant business has been set up in a new unit, Highways has commented on this application and clearly highlighted that Bidwell Lane is a substandard carriageway in width with no foot paths and requested that delivery vehicles use Caldecott Road and not use Bidwell Lane to the West. We have already seen increased number of the large delivery HGV’s (Haulage companies - YODEL, Hermes and other) start using the West side of the Bidwell Lane possible just following their satnav on daily basis for deliveries to this business location. There’s clear need of signage should be in place in first instance to warn the driver it is not suitable for HGVs. Clear signage should minimise the issue of larger vehicles unnecessarily using the Bidwell Lane West side as their normal daily delivery route and putting us residents, walkers & horse riders and them both in danger. There should be a permanent visible sign for HGV drivers coming via A6/B645 to highlight the fact it is not suitable for HGV’s and perhaps also a sign to warn it’s a single tack road head. The entrance can be very misleading from West to Bidwell Lane as it’s wide by the entrance point but It’s a very narrow single-track road ahead with often flooded Ford with little rain and plants overgrown into the road in the summer. There is no passing bypass place or area for any oncoming large HGV’s to turn. If they are facing oncoming traffic from residents or agricultural vehicles (there are agricultural vehicles often using this road as there’s numerous farmland access points along the Bidwell Lane) there is no room to manoeuvre, and they try to reverse into residential private shared roads which is dangerous and a safety concern. We have highlighted and repeat this issue to Highways on many occasions so far. Within the nearby surrounding areas/villages we have seen similar signs put up to warn large lorry drivers including some even major roads compare to Bidwell Lane hence there is a duty of care for Highway Authority to investigate this matter and erect a permanent sign accordingly.
