Edge and curb collapsed causing step uneven path due to pavement being used as extra road

Reported via mobile in the Slabs - Uneven / Damaged / Cracked category by Michael Cunliffe at 11:47, Sat 25 November 2023

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. ref: 5251697.

For over a year the kerb and pavement has been "driven" down on the edge of the narrow pavement. Causing a real and current risk to pedistrian safety. Offering no or little edge preventing vechicles from extending the road to the pavement. The junction is narrow a does not fit modern vechicles well. when there is traffic in both directions and it is a blind bend. Resulting in the pavement being used as extra road Vechicles take emergency aviodance and drive on the pavement to miss on coming traffic ( when heading towards Raunds). This happens often even if there is somebody on the path. Probably as people are used to a kerb stopping them from doing so and there us not one ( move left expect to rub against a kerb but as this is now virtual none they mount the pavement). The last occurance was 28th Oct when I had to twist to avoid a van driving on the kerb coming around the corner towards me.

The kerb is now very nearly the same height as the road offering no protection to pedestrians

It is a very narrow path and you have to use/step on the area - this causes you to "fall" down the slope into the road and traffic. I watched a lady with with a pram struggle to keep it from going into the road. I have had a stroke leg weakness cause the same effect for me

I am sure it is so angled and narrow now a person's body and limb is very nearly over the road way now.

It has been dangeriouse for over a year causing a very real and likely risk to pedistrians (car crashed a few meteres from this point at the end of Oct this year)

  • Investigation: Ongoing - We are sorry to hear about the concerns you have at this location. Having inspected the area, we have found no highway safety defects that warrant any action. The road is historically this width and highways can only maintain the existing highway structure. We also saw no safety concerns in regards to the kerbs which are all consistent and uniform at this location. However, due to the issues raised we have referred this to our Community Liaison Team to see if there is anything further that can be done at this location to make the pedestrians feel safer.
